- DIED. Clarence Norris, 76, the last survivor of the
- Scottsboro Boys, nine black teenagers unjustly convicted of
- raping two white women near Scottsboro, Ala., in 1931, even
- though one of the women withdrew her accusation; in New York
- City. After 15 years in prison, including five on death row,
- Norris was paroled in 1946 and fled to New York City, where he
- worked in a warehouse. When he was finally pardoned in 1976,
- Norris said, "The lesson to black people, to my children, to
- everybody, is that you should always fight for your rights, even
- if it kills you."
